Deal calls for pumps that fix ‘hot fuel’ problem

KansasCity.com -- A fix for “hot fuel” is finally on the way.

In a precedent-setting decision, a federal judge has approved Costco Wholesale’s plans to keep customers from being shortchanged because gasoline and diesel fuel lose energy value as their temperature goes up.

In 14 states, not including Kansas and Missouri, Costco is set to be the first retailer to install pumps that automatically adjust fuel volume to account for temperature.
Costco was among several defendants in class-action lawsuits alleging that oil companies and retailers were costing consumers billions of dollars a year by selling them fuel without adjusting for temperature. Last year, Costco was the first to offer to settle the suits, which had landed in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan.

I agree with datuner.

''This will just wind up costing the consumer more, wait and see. As papapacker already stated, gasoline tanks are underground and the temperature down there does not fluctuate as much so this is really a non-issue.''

LOL!!! idigau22!

Remember seeing them but have to admit, never saw one being used either... ;)

As for vtroger... your thought process just adds to the fire. Its not just your two cents, its the other 300 vehicles that fuel up at that station each month (only 10 vehicles a day), multiply that by the number of stations in your area, then by county, then by state and the numbers become pretty impressive! Its not just the individual that saves a few pennies but overall it makes the big corps and even down to the individual gas station give their customers a true gallon of gas at the posted price rather than have them make a few extra "thousands to millions to billions of pennies!!

This is just another step to put the screws to the public.'ididau22' said it right, years ago they had a glass globe on the pump and you could see what was pumped at any temp. More gov't control and a waste of money on this project.

Yeah no need for gov't interference. Just let companies keep ripping everyone off. They should be allowed to.

Rediculous. It's costing me less than two cents difference with the temperature change. Nothing drastic enough to warrant a law suit or even a new pump system. Wasting money.

I can remember way back when all the pumps had a small glass globe on the pumps. You could see the fuel being pumped! Just below the globe was a sign that read, "Accurate At Any Pressure Or Temperature". You would think the new modern pumps could pump an accurate amount of product!

This is such BS. Gas is stored underground and the temperature in cool until it gets in your tank. This is more catering to the goofballs that like to make noise.

I recall somewhere that we were told to fill up early morning and pump at the slowest notch, first that cooler gas was better and less air in the tank when filling slowly.
Now they're going to heat the gas???? Make up our minds!

Unless a station has above ground tanks, the discrepancy will be small. In colder climates where the average temperature is below the standard temperature, the dealers will benefit from the error correction. I see the lawyers making making money and the consumers deriving no real benefits. An average savings of 1.3 cents per sale is less than a dollar a year for me. This is hardly the rip-off the article would have lead one to think.

This is dumb and a solution in search of a problem. The gas is stored in underground tanks where the temperature hardly varies.

The only time it could possibly matter is when the gas comes straight off a tanker truck on a 95 degree day.

We've been doing that for years in Canada. All pumps are calibrated to 15 degrees celcius. This is to give a standard volume when dispensing.
