It sounds like a lot more research should be done! Is all of this oil and gas worth such risk?

Just keep denying science, djm5x9. It's very easy to deny the facts when you don't understand them.
That's why republicans like slashing education. Keep your voters ignorant so they won't ask any uncomfortable questions.

This problem has been known for many years. The energy companies know it and deny it just like big tobacco denied that smoking causescancer.

I'll admit, dougtaylor1, that small earthquakes are better than large ones. The only problem is that very often small earthquakes PRECEDE large ones.
Dumping fracking fluid down old wells is like jacking up your truck on uneven ground. Don't be surprised if the truck slides off the jack.

BobbyVA says, "This is the agenda of the liberal progressives and environmental nuts are pushing. If the truth hit them in the face they wouldn't know it."
So Bobby, does your cable box get any channels besides Fox News?

Big oil and gas will keep fracking until the Western U.S. slides into the Pacific and then they'll still say it wasn't their fault.

Nice try at selective definition-chasing after the fact, Johntxx. Unfortunately it's got nothing to do with what you actually posted, which was this: => Throughout the seventeenth century, there were many trials due to suspicions of witchcraft . Many people accused others of witchcraft because of hatred, or the townspeople wanted to rid the town of the unfortunately accused. So it is with hydraulic fracturing, and the “science” attacking it is quite similar to tests for witchcraft. If they sink and drown then they aren’t a witch, but it they float and live, to the gallows. <= When playing the gut-level overhyped fearmongering card it's good to have some clue what you're talking about ("A witch-hunt is a search for witches or evidence of witchcraft, often involving moral panic, mass hysteria and lynching"). (BTW your limitation to the 17th century leaves out the 18th, 16th and 15th centuries. That's a lot of charred human flesh swept under the rug) Three and a half centuries this went on. Entire villages exterminated for the sake of an organized terrorist power grab. And you seriously want to compare THAT with a paper to be given at the Seismological Society of America conference in San Diego. (SMH) Ya really can't make this stuff up.

We are between a rock and a hard place. Everybody wants the low cost natural gas. Some even insist we convert or build a nationwide auto fleet using natural gas instead of gasoline. If you do, then you are going to have to put up with hydraulic fracturing and its side effects. If you don't want to do that, then you are going to have to give up on the idea of abundant and affordable natural gas.
The people who are hollering the loudest about using natural gas are the same ones complaining about fracturing and calling for its limitation.
Take your pick.

People forget that the New Madrid fault in the midwest produced some of the largest earthquakes in the US (magnitudes >8.0). And those quakes happened without fracking or global warming. Funny how the earth goes about its business...

The bottom line is, we never know the truth about things until after the facts. That's when the money has been made and the lawyers and public relations specialists are hired. Public relations people to deny any culpability, and the lawyers to threaten anyone who points a finger with a lawsuit.

--------------------Big Oil and the Mob------------------------------------------------------Two guys were sitting at a bar depressed over the most recent rise in gas prices ($3.99.9per gallon on 4-13-12 in Michigan.) One guy says to his friend, " these gas prices are killing me; I can hardly buy enough gas to get to work each week. I can just barely make enough for food for my family. It's a good thing that the MOB isn't involved in the oil industry! They would continually raise gas prices and extort huge profits at the expense of us consumers." The other guy looked up quizzically from his beer and says," I think the MOB has already got Big Oil in their pocket. They finally found a way to legally steal our money!"
